The 4 Basic S

My tennis buddy and I always joke about some simple stuff which we think are fundamentals but can bring something positive to the game. Of course, we do not mean to pick on other people. It’s our own way of saying what is comfortable, convenient and on the button. But this is arbitrary and so long as other people abide by other definitions, it will all be just fine.

Having embarked recently on a thing called running, I suddenly recall the 4 Ss. While I explore the tracks and being the observant person that I am, a few details do not escape me. Maybe these 4 Ss might help. Here you go…

1. Shirt – The rule of thumb is lightness. Wear those thin-cloth and dri-fit jerseys (sleeveless and sporty sandos are fine, too). Others prefer work-out jackets that produce more sweat. My only issue with this is it affects movement and slows you down a bit. Branded apparel is not a must. However, dagdag pogi and ganda points din yon.

2. Shorts – Choose anything lightweight (no maong and cargo shorts, please) as it allows free movement and does not cause discomfort. Also, the lycra running shorts (skin-tight) are a good alternative to the conventional shorts (at pormang runner ka talaga dito).

3. Shoes – Wear proper footwear. The lighter, the softer, the better. You can practically run on any type of shoes, really. Just stay away from the hard-sole ones if you want to rid yourself of any foot injuries. Btw, give your converse all-star sneakers a rest (unless type mo magka-paltos sa paa).

4. Smile – It’s infectious. It brightens up one’s day. On top of all, it’s free. On the road and anywhere else, it is the most adorable accessory, wear it!

Like I said, the above is subjective. It counts to a certain degree. You can go ahead and wear whatever pleases you. Provided that you do it in the name of fitness, good health and fun, everything is A-OK!

Happy sweating!

  1. I agree and a BIG "Y-E-S" to number 4.

Number 4 is mandatory but not required (hehehe) while walking. Someone told me that smiling and walking (chin up) will help you reduce weight :-)
